Designs to Amuse, Inform, and/or Annoy!
The course of my life was set when the basketball coach branded Wayno and me as Yahoos. We hadn't encouraged the starting lineup to miss practice on Monday. We'd just made a beer run on Sunday night. Perhaps more than one. On Tuesday, Coach Harry threatened to cut any player from the team if he caught them hanging out with those Yahoos. On Wednesday, I called shenanigans and hatched a diabolical plan.
T-shirts would turn Harry’s dismissal into our badge of honor. The party faithful liked the design in my geometry notebook. The story behind the design so amused the local screen printer that he brought me behind the counter, cut me a killer deal, and ran off a sample. Two weeks later, the party faithful were sporting their t-shirts - in class, on the street, and notoriously, at basketball games.
Cheerleaders encouraged our rowdy antics with callouts in their cheers. Broadcasters pushed the brand into the zeitgeist as they covered games on the radio. The railroad bridge near the state line was tagged with Yahoos in black Krylon. Tags on a house under construction asked and answered our existential question: "Q: Who has more fun than us? A: NOBODY!" A cult of personality quickly sprang up. "Where's the party tonight? Ask a Yahoo." Nobody had more fun than us and in no time, everybody knew it.
Learning more from this experience than from four years of higher education, I declined their college scholarship to pursue further adventures in sales. Earning while learning with on-the-job training struck me as a better deal. Chris Lytle's training turned me into a marketing mercenary. Accepting job offers from customers led to management gigs. Launching a home center, rebranding a radio station, and quadrupling sales for an automotive brand to pay the bills, I continued building my brands.
